Published 2026-03-16 · Will the loser of Tottenham vs. Nottingham Forest be relegated?

The whispers around the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this weekend won't just be about Ange Postecoglou’s tactical masterclass or Heung-min Son’s latest heroics. No, for many, the real drama will unfold at the other end of the Premier League table, where Nottingham Forest is fighting for its life. To suggest the loser of Spurs vs. Forest will face automatic relegation is hyperbole, pure and simple. But for Nottingham Forest, a defeat could very well be the final nail in their top-flight coffin.

Look, Spurs are chasing Champions League football. They sit fifth, three points behind Aston Villa with a game in hand. They’ve dropped points in frustrating fashion recently, drawing 1-1 with West Ham and losing 3-0 to Fulham in their last five league outings. They need three points here, desperately. Forest, however, needs them more. Nuno Espírito Santo’s side currently hovers in 17th, just three points above Luton Town and two above Burnley. A loss to Spurs, coupled with wins for either of those relegation rivals, could see them plummet into the bottom three with only six games remaining.

Here's the thing: Forest's form against top-half teams has been abysmal. They’ve managed just one point from their last five league games against teams currently in the top ten, a 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace on March 9. Their last win against a top-tier side was a surprising 2-0 victory over Aston Villa back on November 5. That's nearly five months without beating a team in the top half. This isn't just a tough run of fixtures; it's a pattern of struggle against quality opposition. Their attacking output is a major concern too. Taiwo Awoniyi, their most potent striker when fit, has only four league goals this season, and the team as a whole has scored a paltry 39 goals in 31 games. Only Sheffield United, Burnley, and Luton have scored fewer.

Real talk: Forest's points deduction for breaching financial rules changed everything. The initial four-point penalty, reduced to two on appeal, meant they were battling a deficit before a ball was even kicked in anger in the new year. Without that deduction, they’d be sitting on 28 points, a much healthier six points clear of the drop zone. Instead, they're clinging on by their fingernails. They’ve only managed two wins in their last ten Premier League fixtures, beating West Ham 2-0 on February 17 and Fulham 3-1 on April 2. That Fulham win was crucial, but it also masked some deeper issues. Their away record is particularly grim: just two wins on the road all season, the last coming against Manchester United at Old Trafford on December 30.

I'll be blunt: Tottenham will win this game comfortably. Harry Kane might be gone, but Son, Richarlison, and James Maddison have enough firepower to slice through Forest's often-porous defense. Forest’s best hope lies in a gritty, low-block performance and hoping for a set-piece miracle. But against a Spurs side desperate to bounce back from their West Ham draw and keep pace with Villa, I just don't see it happening.

My bold prediction: Forest loses to Spurs, then proceeds to pick up no more than four points from their remaining six games and ultimately gets relegated by a margin of at least three points.
