🔬 6 Sports Myths Debunked by Science

🚫 "Home teams always have an advantage"

✅ The Truth:

Home advantage has been declining for 20 years. In the 2020 COVID season with empty stadiums, home win % dropped to 43.3% (from the usual 46%). The crowd DOES help, but it's smaller than you think — about 3-5% advantage, not the 15-20% people assume.

🚫 "Momentum is real in sports"

✅ The Truth:

Multiple studies show "momentum" doesn't exist statistically. A team scoring 3 goals in 10 minutes isn't on a "hot streak" — they're benefiting from variance and opponent collapse. The "hot hand" in basketball is real (confirmed in 2018), but game-level momentum is mostly narrative.

🚫 "Players peak at 27-28"

✅ The Truth:

Physical peak varies by position. Goalkeepers peak at 30-33. Strikers peak at 25-27. NBA point guards peak at 27-30. LeBron was elite at 37. Messi won the World Cup at 35. Peak age is not a hard number — it's a range influenced by style, injuries, and fitness.

🚫 "Defense wins championships"

✅ The Truth:

Not always. The 2017-18 Warriors won with offense (113 points per game). Manchester City won 4 straight PL titles with the best attack, not the best defense. The truth: you need both. But if you have to choose, elite offense beats elite defense in modern sports.

🚫 "Big signings always improve teams"

✅ The Truth:

Research shows the correlation between transfer spending and league position is weaker than you'd expect (~0.6 R²). Wolves spent £100M+ and got relegated. Chelsea spent £1B and finished 12th. Money helps, but coaching, culture, and recruitment intelligence matter more.

🚫 "Clutch players exist (statistically)"

✅ The Truth:

Most "clutch" performances are small sample sizes and confirmation bias. Jordan's shooting % in the final minute of close games was actually below his career average. The exception: free throw shooting under pressure IS measurably worse (4-7% drop). Choking is real; clutch-ness isn't.
